James Kneller

Dr James Kneller is Assistant Professor of Physics and Applied Mathematics at Northeastern University London, where he teaches first-year American study abroad students. He completed his PhD in materials physics from Queen Mary University of London in 2019, specialising in organic electronics and photovoltaic devices. Before academia, James worked as a laser engineer in the medical industry, specialising in the physics of laser tattoo removal.

James previously chaired the Institute of Physics London and Southeast Branch and served as Associate Director for Outreach and Public Engagement. He founded PLANCKS UK&IRE (Physics League Across Numerous Countries for Kick-ass Students), establishing a UK version of the international undergraduate physics championship. For his pioneering work in community outreach and global partnership building, James received the 2024 Institute of Physics Phillips Award. When not pondering physics, he’s a qualified fencing coach running London Region competitions and setting up his own fencing club.
